Challenge: Practice product photography using natural light

Progress

Quick fixes to elevate your product photography with natural light

Ready to make your products shine? After an inspiring workshop with Reem from the Canadian Photography Learning Centre (available to Champion members in your Workshop Replays), we’re dedicating this challenge to mastering the art of the perfect shot.

This challenge is all about experimentation, whether you’re playing with depth of field, testing out bounce cards near a window or trying your hand at editing.

Grab your camera (or smartphone), pick a technique and share with us!

Why do this challenge?

To practice the techniques we learned in our workshop. As you get used to using these settings on your camera/smartphone, you’ll hopefully start using them more to improve your photography.

If you’re a photography newbie, this challenge will help you to take better photos for your shop. And if you’re already a pro photo taker there are always new things to learn and practice!

The details

Begins: April 1
Ends: April 30

Our challenges are self-led. We encourage you to post about your progress in the comments!

How to participate

To take part in the challenge, start a brand-new post in the Monthly Challenges section once you’ve completed one of the tasks below and share your photos!

If you’d like to practice more than one of the techniques, just leave a reply to your own post. At the end of the month, leave a reflection on how things went for you.

These don't need to be long updates! You can include point form written updates or images — anything that shows what you have been up to.

What do I need to do?

Choose one (or more, if you'd like) of the following options. Timecodes are included to show you where in the webinar recording Reem covers the technique.

  • Take 1-3 photos using a shallow depth of field (10:15, 14:13)
  • Take 1-3 photos using a higher depth of field (10:15, 12:58)
  • Take 1-3 photos using the grid on your camera, placing your subject at the points of intersection (40:54)
  • Take 1-3 photos using the exposure setting to adjust the lighting in-camera (21:40)
  • Take 1-3 photos near a window using a lighting diffusion technique and bounce card (25:22)
  • Take 1-3 photos simplifying your scene — if you normally shoot products with lots of stuff in the background, challenge yourself to reduce what’s in frame! (39:14)
  • Take 1-3 photos using a different background than you normally do — try something textural! (44:17)
  • Edit 1-3 photos using the free Snapseed app and share the before and after. (46:04, additional tips are here. Find the app in the Apple Store or the Google Play store)
