Six insider tips for attending the Northumberland Vintage Show

Progress

With 85 vendors, this outdoor show outside Peterborough, Ontario is a vintage hunter’s dream

This article was produced as part of a media partnership with the Northumberland Vintage Show.

The perfect Saturday for a vintage lover usually involves hunting for some incredible treasures — maybe a coffee and a lovely little lunch, too. Better yet if it involves a day trip with a friend to share (or fight over) the finds.

If you’re within driving distance of Southern Ontario, plan for this dream kind of Saturday at the second annual Northumberland Vintage Show in Roseneath, Ont. on Sept. 13. (Roseneath is close to Peterborough — less than two hours’ drive from Toronto and 90 minutes from Kingston.)

With 85 confirmed vendors selling everything from mid-century decor to vintage fashion to records to jewellery to art, you are bound to snag something you love at the all-outdoor show.

Last year, we found some fantastic stuff: kitschy collectibles, vintage fur coats, Florentine trays, antique furniture, trucker hats, plenty of crystal, brass fireplace fans, Lacoste jackets and so much more. We’ll be there again this year, this time as a media partner helping to promote the show, so come say hi!

Here are six insider tips to ensure you get the most out of your day:

1. Bring cash.

Some vendors at the show will take credit card and/or e-transfer, but it’s best not to rely on it as other vendors are cash only.

There’s no ATM on-site. The closest ATM machines are a 10-minute drive away in Alderville or Warkworth, so plan ahead and bring enough bills with you so you don’t miss out on the perfect find heading to get cash while someone else is already handing over theirs.

2. Come early to get the best stuff.

The show runs 9 am to 5 pm. Every vintage hunter worth their grail knows to arrive early, and we’d advise showing up ASAP for three reasons. One, you’ll have the first pick of all the goodies. Two, the first 50 attendees will get a swag bag. And three, you’ll have more time to stroll and browse with intention.

We always recommend doing a first pass through a booth then a second walkthrough, because there is a lot to look at and you might miss something the first time!

3. Dress for the environment.

The Northumberland Vintage Show is held outdoors in a field. The vendor area has short grass with lots of sandy patches. You’ll be walking for a while visiting all the vendors, so we’d recommend wearing comfortable sneakers (or sandals if you prefer).

The parking area is on some tamped-down long grass, so give yourself a quick tick check before heading back home. The event happens rain or shine, so pack your sunscreen and hat, and a slicker and umbrella just in case.

4. Say hi to the donkeys — and help them out!

Walking into the show area, you’ll be greeted by a friendly donkey named Maisie, so be sure to stop by, say hi and take a photo.

The show’s organizers, Kaitlyn and Frazer at Good as Old, are both donkey lovers and volunteer with Maisie’s home, a nearby farm called PrimRose Donkey Sanctuary that rehabilitates neglected and abused donkeys and mules.

Admission to the show is free, but donations are encouraged to support the sanctuary. One look at Maisie’s cute face and you’ll open your wallet — but don’t forget to leave some funds to buy all the vintage.

While it’s an outdoor event with a donkey, make sure to leave your best furry buddy at home — there’s a no-dog policy (except for service animals).

5. Get to know the vendors.

One of the best parts of attending local events like Northumberland Vintage Show is connecting with the people behind the shops. Every vendor has their own eye, and they love to talk about where their finds come from.

Ask questions and follow your favourite sellers on Instagram to keep up with their shops year-round. Vintage hunting is even more rewarding when you have a community of like-minded collectors to talk to.

6. Plan to make a day of it.

Beyond the shopping, several food and beverage vendors will be on hand at the show.

Pack your tote bags to carry your finds, grab a coffee or tea while browsing, and check out the other non-vintage vendors too, including florists, handmade artisans, a giveaway at a community film festival and tasty local bites.

And don’t miss the raffle with fun giveaways for attendees.

Follow along on the show's Instagram to catch sneak peeks of what's coming, vendor spotlights and all the info you'll need for the perfect Saturday hunting for vintage in the country.

See you at the show!
